Top Threats to Humanity
|
This is a Risk Diagram, often used by analysts to assess priorities in dealing with Risks. Along the horizontal axis is a current assessment of how severe the action would be, with “5” for devastation to a large portion, or all, of humanity. A low rating, “1”, could be because although the consequences could be very bad, it would be only for a small portion of the population (most terrorist attacks); a medium rating implies medium-bad for many people (global warming). Along the vertical axis is an assessment of the likelihood that the threat actually could happen.
The color codes evaluate the level of concern (multiply the two numbers) to prioritize planning for the threat, with reds being the highest priorities and greens lowest. Most of these threats need prevention and contingency preparation, but some deserve greater efforts than others. Each Threat may have a variety of scenario’s, so multiple boxes may be marked. For example, there are small and large asteroids and comets, but a large, globally-threatening impact is much less likely than a smaller body hitting Earth. Mesorg is at the pinnacle of Concern because it is so likely to happen and is a Lifeform that cannot be exterminated or banned once it is invented and escapes our control. Terrorism is ranked lower than Nuclear war because although it occurs repeatedly, the number of people affected by it is much smaller (lesser consequences, other than fear-factor). Various experts fill in the Risk Diagram differently, depending upon their perspective and convictions. |
